All vapes are legal in the UK as long as they comply with regulations and are fit for sale. In fact, the government and National Health Service (NHS) support vaping as the most effective stop-smoking tool. But what types of vapes are legal to be sold? Let’s take a look.

The Tobacco and Related Products Regulations (TRPR)

UK lawUK law

In 2016, the UK government implemented new regulations for vaping calledThe Tobacco and Related Products Regulations (TRPR), in line with the EU’s 2014 Tobacco Products Directive (TPD).

All tobacco and vape products must comply with TRPR, which requires thorough screening of e-liquid ingredients and emissions testing. Producers must notify the MHRA of the information gathered before they can legally sell e-liquid to consumers, preventing the inclusion of harmful ingredients.

What are the TRPR Regulations?

The MHRA regulations set the standards of safety and quality for vape manufacturers. It is intended to provide quality control, ensure consumers make informed choices, and protect children from using products

The Requirements:

  • Tank sizes (including pre filled) can only be 2ml.
  • E-liquid bottles or refill containers can’t contain more than 10ml of vape juice.
  • The maximum strength of e-liquid is 2.0% (20mg).
  • Additives such as caffeine and taurine can’t be included in e-liquid.
  • All liquid ingredients must be submitted to the MHRA before they can be sold.
  • The sale and manufacture of disposable vapes will be prohibited to from June 1st 2025.
  • Require products containing nicotine to be child resistant and temper evident.
  • Feature new labelling requirements and warnings.

Some disposables and liquids have a 5% (50mg) nicotine strength, these aren’t legal in the UK. It’s certainly too high for most new vapers and is the equivalent of around 50 cigarettes. This is why the TRPR limits the strength to 2%, which is only around 20.
